Ever wonder your unique role in protecting the planet?

Look no further than the Iowa and Minnesota Campus Compact’s Social Change Wheel.

In June of 2020, the Iowa and Minnesota Campus Compact designed the “Social Change Wheel 2.0” – a circular infographic that outlines twelve unique strategies for people to get involved in community action. Though the wheel is based on “campus strategies” for addressing social change, its contents are useful for anyone looking to make a difference.

The Social Change Wheel 2.0 is especially powerful when thinking about our relationship with climate change. Global warming can feel overwhelming to confront, but the Social Change Wheel 2.0 offers twelve ways to get involved, providing an opportunity for everyone out there who knows they want to help save the planet but are not exactly sure how.

The chart works in three rings: the outermost ring focusing on social change broadly, the inner ring looks at campus-based strategies, and its center revolves around anti-racism and equity.

Below you will find explanations for the outer ring. What type of service most interests you?

Volunteering and Direct Service : You like to volunteer your time to address immediate needs in the community. This could include trash pick-ups, helping people at a shelter after a natural disaster, or donating items to a food bank.
Socially Responsible Daily Behavior: You have educated yourself on climate issues and make small changes to your daily routine that will make a big difference in the long run. You might opt out of using plastic bags, eat a vegetarian diet, and bike to work because you understand your carbon footprint.

How you can reduce your carbon footprint

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is the measure of emissions that an individual or group produces over a set period of time. Everything from one's diet, to transportation, to the products one purchases, to the number of electronics plugged in at home can contribute to one's carbon footprint. Here are a few ideas for how you can lessen your own impact!

Ways you can reduce your carbon footprint:

Consumption:

Reduce your meat intake (try going pescatarian, vegetarian, or vegan one day a week!)
Carry a reusable water bottle
Bring a cloth tote bag to the store
Shop at local businesses
Compost and recycle as much as you can
Thrift your clothes
Buy products without plastic packaging (bar soap over bottled shampoo for example)

Home:

Turn off all lights when not in use
Unplug from outlets when not in use (or purchase outlet-timers)
Wash clothes on cold
And then hang your laundry up to dry
Adjust the thermostat by a degree or two

Upgrades:

What is the Metaverse?

The Metaverse is a digital copy of our own world that we can interact in. By "digital copy", we mean there will be a digital landscape in the Metaverse that mirrors real life places, from factories to national parks. We can interact in the EnviroVerse by conducting work meetings, to working out, to playing video games.

As of right now, all you need to enter the Metaverse is a VR headset. Some developers like Meta are even in the process of creating gloves to wear in person that will simulate touch from within the Metaverse!

How can the Metaverse help the environment?

The Metaverse has unlimited potential for protecting the environment. This is why Enviro.AI is focused on creating what we call the Enviroverse. What are VOC gases and why are they harmful to the planet?

What are VOC gases?

VOC gases are a type of air pollution. VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, which are carbon-containing gas forms of solid or liquid chemicals. Common sources of VOCs include gasoline, cleaning agents, paint, pesticides, etc.

What happens when VOCs enter the air?

VOCs outdoors can result in acid rain, which brings bad news to our ecosystems. Acid rain raises the pH of our water systems, which can kill fish and prevent their eggs from hatching. High pH water also harms the animals, animals, and people that use the water for drinking, agriculture, etc.

VOCs can also contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone that forms smog. This type of smog harms both plant and human health by increasing the chance for sometimes deadly diseases.
